Fasting Together: When Ramadan and Lent Align

Fast A Thon & Iftar 2026

As Ramadan and Lent once again overlap in 2026, communities across North Lincolnshire are invited to come together in an evening of shared reflection, learning, and unity. The UNITED: Strength in Diversity Interfaith Group is delighted to host this year’s Fast A Thon and Iftar, taking place at North Lindsey College.

This special interfaith gathering welcomes people of all faiths and none, including partner organisations, community groups, local businesses, and residents who wish to experience a day of fasting, learn about each other’s traditions, and share in the joyful moment of breaking the fast together.

When Two Seasons of Reflection Align

Ramadan 2026 is expected to run from 18 February to 20 March (subject to moon sighting). During this month, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, practising self discipline, compassion, prayer, and community.

At the same time, Christians observe Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, 18 February 2026, and continuing until Holy Saturday, 4 April 2026. Lent is a season of fasting, reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual preparation.

The overlap of these sacred periods creates a unique opportunity to deepen interfaith understanding and appreciation—something the Fast A Thon warmly embraces.

A Gathering of Reflection, Community, and Learning

The event will feature guest speakers who will share the significance of these spiritual traditions:

  1. Imaam Sayful Ahmed, who will speak about the meaning of Ramadan and lead prayers at sunset
  2. Tom MacDonald, Lead Pastor at Connect Church, who will offer reflections on the Christian observance of Lent

What to Expect

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  1. Take part in a fast for all or part of the day
  2. Learn about Ramadan and Lent, their meaning, and their shared values
  3. Observe prayers and moments of reflection
  4. Join together for a free Iftar meal as the fast is broken at sunset

Whether you choose to fast or simply wish to attend, learn, and share in the community meal, everyone is welcome.

This interfaith celebration is a chance to meet new people, strengthen connections across our diverse community, and experience the spirit of unity during two profound seasons of reflection.
