Strong Today, Steady Tomorrow – Building Strength for Life
18 September 2025, by Victoria Wall
LiveWell North Lincolnshire is proudly supporting Strong Today, Steady Tomorrow (22-26) to celebrate Falls Prevention Week 2025.
Approximately one in three people aged 65 and over fall at least once per year—and that rises to one in two for those aged 80 and over according to the Office for Health and Improvement Disparities.
By staying physically active regularly and make small adjustments to your lifestyle, you can reduce your risk of falls in later life.
Dr. Anam Abrar, preventive lead for North Lincolnshire and GP partner at Ancora Medical Practice, said: “As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, bone density, and balance. This can make everyday activities harder and increases the risk of falls — one of the leading causes of hospital admissions for older adults. The good news? Strength and balance exercises can slow, stop, and even reverse much of this decline.”
Speaking about Strong Today, Steady Tomorrow Dr Abrar, said: “The Strong Today, Steady Tomorrow campaign is about encouraging people of all ages to invest in their future health. By building stronger muscles and bones now, you protect yourself from injuries, maintain your independence, and improve your overall wellbeing.”
There are lots of benefits to staying active at any age, even just a few minutes a day to go for a walk, meet a friend for coffee or join a fitness class for some gentle exercise can help.
Dr Abrar said: “Stronger muscles support your joints, protect your bones from fractures, and even help regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing — many can be prevented. The message is simple: it’s never too early and never too late to start.”
What you can do to reduce your risk of a fall
“Look for local leisure clubs, community classes, or online programmes that focus on strengthening and balance exercises”, said Dr Abrar, “These will help you stay active, mobile, and confident in daily life, “Small, regular steps now lead to a healthier, steadier tomorrow.”
Alex Seale, Place Director for North Lincolnshire with NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) said: "The NHS in North Lincolnshire is delighted to be working with partners across health and care to encourage people of all ages to think about what they need to do now to give themselves the best chance of enjoying healthier, more independent older years.
"The benefits of getting more active and increasing your strength, even by a little, are huge and the good news is it's never too late to start with the right support."
