Crowle Entertainers present a brand-new exciting play with a live choir and live music.

This play is about the turbulent history of the drainage of the Isle of Axholme.

Vermuyden 400 – Spirit of the Waters is an exciting combination of drama and folk songs. It tells the strange and sometimes violent story about an important few years in the Isle of Axholme when it was very different to look at from the way it is now today.

The people who lived in the Isle of Axholme made a living on the watery landscape and told stories about strange creatures like ‘The Tiddy Mun’ who inhabited the marshes as a local superstition.

Then King Charles I and a Dutch engineer named Vermuyden requested to drain the Isle of Axholme. It was the agreed to split it into three sections, one third for the king, one third for the Dutch and the remaining land for the locals.

This play shows what it was like before the drainage and then once the drainage was commenced know about why the land was drained.
